The first Sunday in October in Germany is the day of 'Erntedankfest' or the Harvest Festival which is similar to Thanksgiving in America!
A typical Erntedankfest starts with a church service in the morning where the alters of the churches are decorated with wheat and the fruits of harvest season such as pumpkins, eggplants, squashes, tomatoes and lots of sunflowers! Erntekrone (Harvest crowns) are made from wheat, ribbon, flowers and placed in the home for good fortune! As well as the parades take place all over Germany in the evening - these are called Laternenumzug or Lantern parade! Do you have any harvest traditions? Let us know in the comments!
