How to learn German effectively!

Having goals when learning German online is crucial to success, however you must stay aligned with your goals and study effectively to achieve them.

No two students are the same when learning German, and no two practices will work for the same student, however we pride ourselves on our 80%+ student retention rate, and our simple and practical steps that will help you learn German effectively to match your goals.

Remember your motivation

Whether you are learning for fun, for travel purposes, or to advance your career, reminding yourself of your motivation daily will ensure you continue to practice and work towards your goals. Your motivation will drive you towards your goals, and keep you focused on the various aspects of the language; reading, writing, speaking, comprehension. Your native German teacher will work with you to achieve your goals with weekly catch ups and discussions on your progress and your motivation.

Keep it simple

You can make learning German as easy or as difficult as you like, but we like to think the easy route gets the most success. Working with your German teacher, you will devise daily activities to improve your German language retention and comprehension such as the 2 minute rule (insert link to procrastination blog), where you practise reading, writing, listening and speaking German for 2 minutes and gradually work your way up. You can also set a goal of 20 new words per week in business German for example. Simple, measured tasks add up to big progress.

Find out what works best for you

The most effective way to learn German is to use techniques that you like that work for you. We encourage students to try the extra curricular activities in our exclusive student library, and figure out if listening, reading, or watching Netflix works for you, or maybe just speaking out loud, whatever it is, find the best techniques that allow you to excel on your German language journey.

Make it fun

Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life’ same is to be said for learning German. You started learning German to achieve your goals, and the best way to do that is to have fun and enjoy the experience. Our students all say that our virtual classroom is fun and interactive, and our in class learning, homework and additional activities are all fun to do and never a chore. When you do something you enjoy, you will continue to do it, and get better at it each day. Studying at GermanMind is exciting, engaging and always enjoyable.

Practice daily

Yes we know we have said this many times already, but daily study is essential to achieve your German language goals. Just think back to when you were a baby learning to walk, you didn’t try once a week, you tried multiple times a day until you perfected it, and same goes for learning German. Daily exercises alongside weekly classes will improve your German retention, as well as improving your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Write your grocery list in German, speak to a friend in German, listen to some German radio, watch a German Netflix show with subtitles, it doesn’t have to be hard, it just has to be consistent. Consistency= progress.
